The Garda Síochána Act 2005 (PDF, 312 MB) is the major piece of legislation that sets out the statutory functions of An Garda Síochána. Section 7 (1) (e), of the aforementioned Act provides that one of these functions is to provide policing and security services for the State with the objective of preventing crime. Section 7 (2) of the same act states that, for the purpose of achieving this and other statutory objectives, “The Garda Síochána shall co-operate, as appropriate, with other Departments of State, agencies and bodies having, by law, responsibility for any matter relating to any aspect of that objective”.
