On 19th February 2008, the Garda Commissioner announced the establishment of a Working Group to review the training and development arrangements in An Garda Síochána for Garda and civilian personnel. The 10-member panel is made up of representatives from both the public and private sector and will make its recommendations to the Commissioner by the end of November 2008. Student Probationer Training is part of the Working Group's mandate.
Submission to An Garda Síochána re the Garda Corporate Strategy 2007-2009
The NCC is pleased to note that competitions for the recruitment of Crime and Policing Analysts in an Garda Síochána were held in early 2007, that one Senior Crime and Policing Analyst and two Higher Crime and Policing Analyst positions have been filled to date and that the process of setting up an Analysis Service in An Garda Síochána is underway. A further 28 Crime and Policing Analyst posts were advertised on the 29th November 2007. The closing date for applications to these posts was 4th January 2008. It is understood that the first batch of appointments from this competition were made in May 2008 and that further appointments are imminent.
The NCC also understands that the indications from the Garda Síochána Public Attitudes Survey 2007 are that there was an improvement of 2% in the rates of Public Satisfaction with An Garda Síochána in 2007. The NCC also understands that Joint Policing Committees have also been set up in 29 locations on a pilot basis to date.
