Biography

Dr Nicholas O’Brien

From: Department of Finance

Dr Nicholas O’Brien is the Assistant Secretary General with responsibility for International and EU Division.

He has extensive international and EU experience, having served in the European Commission, Consul General of Ireland in Shanghai and as Deputy Head of Mission at the Irish Embassy in Berlin.

He is Ireland’s representative on the EU’s Economic and Financial Committee and on the Eurogroup Working Group. He serves as Ireland’s representative on the Board of Directors of the European Stability Mechanism and on the Board of Directors of the European Financial Stability Facility.

He chairs the Department’s EU Strategy Committee, which draws together EU policy issues across the Department.
