A National Public Health Emergency Team for COVID-19 was established on 27 January 2020 in the Department of Health, chaired by the Chief Medical Officer. The NPHET oversees and provides national direction, guidance, support and expert advice on the development and implementation of a strategy to contain COVID-19 in Ireland.
The NPHET is the mechanism for coordinating the health sector response to significant public health emergencies. It facilitates the sharing of information between the Department of Health and its agencies. It provides a forum for agreement on strategic approaches to public health emergencies. This approach is in line with the advice of the World Health Organization.
Decisions made by the NPHET are announced through press releases.
Agendas and minutes of previous meetings are published on the Department of Health website once approved by the NPHET and can be found below.
Directly following each meeting, the recommendations of the NPHET are communicated by letter to the Minister for Health for consideration, and these recommendations are used to assist Government in informing its decisions in responding to the public health emergency.
