Vision and Strategy for Specialist Disability Services

The Department of Children, Disability and Equality is examining the model of disability service provision in Ireland as committed to in the National Human Rights Strategy for Disabled People. We are working to:

Develop a new vision and reform strategy for specialist disability supports and services for 2030 to ensure that services are progressively more person-led, sustainable and cost-effective.

This work will seek to ensure services can sustainably continue deliver quality outcomes for all of those who need them into the future.

Key priorities in the development of this vision and strategy are:

  • Create a vision for rights-based and person-led supports in the disability service landscape in Ireland, in partnership with relevant stakeholders.
  • Deliver a policy that will set out what such a support landscape would look like in the Irish context.
  • Seek to ensure that this system is financially sustainable and implementable into the future, anticipating demographics and changing need.
  • Identify and set out necessary actions or reforms relating to existing service models arising from the policy direction set.

This work also aligns with a Programme for Government commitment to deliver a step-change in disability.
