Alliance works globally under IEA umbrella – to reduce CO2 emissions, improve household air quality and health outcomes for families
Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien has pledged €300,000 over the next two years to support the Clean Cooking Alliance.
Under the umbrella of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Clean Cooking Alliance works globally to reduce CO2 emissions, improve household air quality and health outcomes for families, reduce deforestation, and provide strong supports for women and children in particular.
The announcement was made by Minister O'Brien while attending the inaugural meeting on Clean Cooking at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Speaking at the event, Minister O'Brien said:
"Ireland has supported and worked with the Clean Cooking Alliance since 2010 and I am delighted to see that this organisation, which helps to bring clean cooking to so many globally, is now coming under the operation of the International Energy Agency.
"Nearly 2 billion people still lack access to clean cooking globally, contributing to an estimated 2.5 million premature deaths each year. We know this disproportionately affects women and girls and this has to stop. We have the means to stop this.
"I am pleased to announce a voluntary contribution of €300,000 to ensure that the Clean Cooking Alliance will continue to transform the living conditions of so many around the world, particularly women and girls. I also look forward to the upcoming Clean Summit in Kenya in January 2027."

Notes to the Editor
Clean Cooking refers to usage of modern stoves and fuels to reduce pollution, improve health, and protect the climate. Clean cooking reduces CO2 equivalent emissions, improves health outcomes for families because of better household air quality, reduces deforestation and has strong co-benefits for women and children.
The Clean Cooking Alliance joined under the umbrella of the International Energy Agency (IEA) in July of this year, with Ireland becoming a founding member of the new Clean Cooking Alliance. To support the establishment of the new group under the IEA, Minister O’Brien has pledged €300,000 over 2026-2027 to help the Clean Cooking Alliance continue its work under the strategic direction of the new working group at the IEA.
