The Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, today announced awards in capital grants of €377,336 to three Local Authorities for the development of up to five artist workspaces. This funding is provided under the Artist Workspaces Scheme, a €6m capital investment scheme for Local Authorities to enable them to provide additional capacity and availability of artist workspaces in their regions.
The Artist Workspaces scheme was originally launched on 12 June 2024. Today’s announcement brings the total awarded under this scheme to date at €1,586,190.
Under the scheme funding of up €300,000 is available for densely populated Local Authority areas. Funding of up to €150,000 is available for less densely populated areas. The scheme has no closing date and will remain open until the fund has been exhausted.
This €6 million capital scheme delivers on the Government’s commitment under The Programme for Government to increase the provision of affordable workspaces for artists and creative practitioners and ensure the timely delivery of arts and culture capital investment commitments, as outlined in Project Ireland 2040.
Speaking today Minister Patrick O’Donovan said:
“I am pleased to announce funding of €377,336 under the Artist Workspaces Scheme. The funding provided through this scheme is a vital investment in artists and our creative communities. This funding will help provide secure, affordable spaces where artists can create new work, experiment, and collaborate. In doing so, artists will continue to strengthen our vibrant towns and communities while inspiring future generations."
“It has been consistently highlighted that there is a lack of artist workspaces throughout the country. I would encourage other Local Authorities who have not yet applied under this scheme to avail of the funding to develop much needed artists workspaces in their areas.”
This scheme further complements the €3 million funding the Department allocated to Dublin City Council in 2023 as part of the Space to Create Programme. This funding was allocated towards the provision of artists' workspaces in a number of city centre locations and these projects are currently being progressed.
