Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, has welcomed the latest Key Data statistics released by the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) on Ireland’s Electronic Communications market, covering the Q2 2026 period (1 April to 30 June 2026).
ComReg has reported that 87% of all premises across the State can now avail of Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) broadband connectivity, which represents a 9% Year on Year increase, while Take-up of FTTP broadband increased to 53% at the end of Q2 2026, up from 50% at the end of the same period in 2025. 63% of active broadband lines are FTTP. Every county has at least 80% FTTP coverage, with FTTP coverage above 90% in 14 counties. The county with the highest level of FTTP coverage is Westmeath at 95%. 92% of all premises can avail of Gigabit broadband coverage with Gigabit Take-up at 61%. Westmeath and Longford have the highest level of Gigabit coverage at 96%.
Speaking after the Quarterly Key Data Report for the Q2 2026 period was published, Minister O’Donovan said:
I am extremely pleased to note these latest statistics which demonstrate the continued progress being achieved across our telecommunications sector in terms of our digital connectivity and Gigabit capability. We are working towards a target of ensuring that every household and business in Ireland has access to a Gigabit network by 2028. This will be met through a combination of commercial operators continuing to invest in their networks and the State’s National Broadband Plan intervention, which is being implemented by National Broadband Ireland.
Within a relatively short space of time digital infrastructure has become the backbone of our society, driving our economic growth and development as well as playing a critical role in the delivery of our essential day to day services and in our personal interactions. Digital connectivity is increasingly becoming an essential tool for many of our key day-to-day activities. With the National Broadband Plan now entering its final phase, the Government remains committed to delivering universal high-speed connectivity and ensuring that everyone in Ireland can participate fully in this digital transformation and in our digital economy.
