Minister McEntee Officially Reopens Government Offices in Galway Following €11.5 Million Energy Retrofit Investment
The Minister for Defence, Helen McEntee TD, marked the reopening of Áras an tSáile in Renmore, Co. Galway, following the completion of a major €11.467 million energy retrofit project.
The investment has transformed the Government office building into a modern, energy-efficient and more sustainable workplace, improving the building's energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
I am delighted to mark the reopening of Áras an tSáile following this major investment in Galway. This building has been home to Department of Defence offices for nearly four decades and this project demonstrates how we can modernise public buildings while supporting our climate ambitions.
The retrofit has provided a more comfortable, efficient and sustainable workplace for staff. It will also significantly reduce energy use and carbon emissions, helping the public sector meet its climate action commitments.
I would like to thank all those involved in delivering this important project and the staff who continued to work from the building throughout the construction period.

The completion of the energy renovation at Áras an tSáile in Renmore marks a significant milestone in improving the energy efficiency of our public buildings. This project reflects OPW’s commitment to reducing emissions, lowering energy use and supporting a more sustainable built environment for the future.
Delivered in three phases while the building remained occupied, the project required close collaboration between the OPW, the main contractor and the departments involved. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to delivering this important project on time and within budget.
Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin "Boxer" Moran, TD
The retrofit involved major upgrades to the building fabric and mechanical and electrical systems. Works included enhanced wall and roof insulation, replacement windows and glazing, a new heating and ventilation system and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Together, these measures have reduced energy consumption, lowered carbon emissions and improved the long-term sustainability of the building.
A key feature of the project was that the building remained operational throughout the construction programme. Through careful planning and phased delivery, staff were temporarily relocated within the building as works progressed, ensuring that essential public services could continue while the extensive retrofit was undertaken.
