Minister for Education and Youth Hildegarde Naughton has published a series of subject information leaflets for sixth class pupils, their parents and families, and teachers.
The leaflets provide information about the subject options available in post-primary school, what pupils can expect to learn in each subject and how their learning can support future education and career opportunities.
The development of the leaflets supports actions under the Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Strategy 2024-2033 and the STEM Education Policy Statement 2017-2026. The resources also reflect the department's commitment to inclusion and to supporting meaningful engagement between schools, pupils and families.
Minister Naughton said:
“The move from primary to post-primary school is an important milestone for pupils and their families. The leaflets are designed to be used by teachers as part of classroom activities that help pupils explore post-primary subjects and what they involve. Having the information they need at this stage can help pupils feel more confident about the choices ahead of them and encourage conversations.
“I would like to thank the 14 schools, pupils, parents and teachers who helped pilot the leaflets in the last school year. Their feedback has helped to shape these resources, ensuring they are practical, relevant, accessible and responsive to the needs of families as they navigate this important stage of a child's education.
“By bringing the leaflets home, pupils and their parents and families can continue these conversations and explore how different subjects relate to their interests, strengths and future ambitions.”
To make the leaflets available to as many families as possible, they have been translated into English, Irish, Polish, Lithuanian, Ukrainian, Russian, Latvian, Portuguese, Romanian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. An accompanying Irish Sign Language (ISL) video has also been produced.
