Rent a Room

Government is encouraging homeowners to consider renting a room to students after an Amárach Research survey revealed that providing or staying in ‘digs’ accommodation was an overwhelmingly positive experience.

The research showed that elements of a successful tenancy included meeting the student and their parents in advance and agreeing to ground rules, with almost nine in ten digs homeowners currently doing so.

The Rent-a-Room Scheme provides an opportunity for homeowners and Local Authority tenants, who have a spare room in their homes, to offer accommodation to a student and earn additional income. Eligible participants may earn up to €14,000 per year tax-free, subject to the terms and conditions of the scheme.
