To ensure the health and safety of pharmacy staff, please follow these 4 steps when bringing unused or expired medicines to your pharmacy for safe disposal:
Step 1: Check the lists
Check that all your unused, out-of-date or leftover medicines are in the accepted items list and ensure that nothing that is on the not accepted list is in your bag of returned medicines.
If you are unsure if it is suitable to return the type of medicine you have, please ask your pharmacist.
Step 2: Remove outer packaging
Remove all outer cardboard packaging and patient information leaflets (these can be put in your recycling bin as usual).
Also remove any patient-identifying information such as adhesive labels with a patient’s name on it.
Step 3: Contact your pharmacy if disposing of a large quantity of medicines
If you have a large quantity of unused medicines to bring back (e.g. more than you can carry in two hands), contact the pharmacy first to check if they have capacity in their MediBack bin to accept your items.
If they do not have capacity, they will arrange a suitable time for you to bring in the items.
Step 4: Bring medicines to your pharmacy
Bring your unused, out-of-date and leftover medicines to your local community pharmacy for safe disposal, free-of-charge.
