Role of the Placenames Branch

The Placenames Branch is part of The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. The Placenames Branch undertakes research into the placenames of Ireland to provide authoritative Irish language versions of those placenames for official and public use. It also provides support to the Placenames Committee. The working language of the Placenames Branch is Irish.

Duties of the Oifigeach Logainmneach (Placenames Officer)

• Support the staff of the Placenames Branch in determining the authoritative Irish language forms of placenames.

• Research handwritten and published documents to find early versions of placenames and input this content accurately into the office database.

• Collect information on the historical, linguistic, or geographical background of the placenames to help to make decisions on the correct Irish versions.

• Systematically organise the information collected on placenames and discuss this with other members of staff with a view to deciding on the Irish versions.

• Collect the historical, linguistic or geographical background of placenames to help make decisions about the correct Irish language versions.

• Complete field work where necessary.

• Input content and correct it on Logainm.ie

• Provide a quality service to customers, through issuing prompt replies to requests for information on placenames and answering miscellaneous correspondence.

• Promote Ireland’s heritage of placenames, and the state’s policy and role regarding Irish language forms, by means of regularly publishing research-based articles and attending conferences as appropriate.
