Search Room at the General Register Office (GRO)

The GRO Research Room will reopen from 21 July 2021 on an appointment only basis.
Appointments can be requested by emailing GROResearchRoom@welfare.ie
You will be advised on the next available appointment by return email.
Government COVID-19 regulations still apply when visiting the office.
Please note, you can continue to avail of our email service detailing your search/index search request to the same email address above and a member of staff will assist.
While the appointment service is restricted we will offer an email service.
This service requires that you have sufficient information to identify a specific entry from the index.
For reasons of data privacy, staff cannot conduct the research for you or conduct searches using speculative or non-specific information.

You can order copies of entries from the registers from our staff in the research room and if you wish to order certified copies of entries, you can still do so from the General Register Office in Roscommon. Births 1864 - 1919
Marriages 1845 - 1944
Deaths 1878 - 1969
Two types of searches may be undertaken at the genealogical/family history research facility:
- specific search covering a maximum of 5 years for a fee of €5
- a general search covering any number of years for a fee of €20 per day
The fee for a copy of an entry from the records is €5.
Indexes in relation to the following records of life events are available for searching in the Search Room:
- births registered in the island of Ireland between 1 January 1864 and 31 December 1921 inclusive, and in the Republic of Ireland from 1922 onwards
- deaths registered in the island of Ireland between 1 January 1864 and 31 December 1921 inclusive and in the Republic of Ireland from 1922 onwards
- marriages registered in the island of Ireland between 1 April 1845 and 31 December 1921 inclusive and in the Republic of Ireland from 1922 onwards
- domestic adoptions registered in Ireland from 10 July 1953 onwards

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media provide online access to indexes and register pages for genealogy purposes on www.irishgenealogy.ie.
The site holds the following records:
- births - indexes and register pages for births which occurred from 1864 and 1919
- marriages – indexes and register pages for marriages which occurred between 1845 and 1944
- deaths – indexes and register pages for deaths which occurred between 1878-1969, and indexes for deaths which occurred from 1864 to 1877
