The Department of Finance's mission is to manage government finances and play a central role in the achievement of the government’s economic and social goals having regard to the Programme for Government.
Recruitment for the Department of Finance is generally conducted, through open competition, by the Public Appointments Service (PAS). The PAS is the centralised provider of recruitment, assessment and selection services for the civil service and is the main access route for candidates interested in joining the public service.

The Civil Service Renewal Plan commits to expanding career and mobility opportunities for staff across geographic, organisational and sectoral boundaries. In line with this commitment, a new Civil Service Mobility Scheme launched on Monday 13th November 2017, enabling all permanent staff in the general Civil Service grades of Clerical Officer and Executive Officer to apply for mobility.
This phase of mobility includes moves between and within 46 zones. However, it excludes moves between organisations within Dublin, which will be introduced in 2018.
