Our Rural Future: Minister Humphreys approves the business case for Inis Oírr pier

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Tuesday 20 April) announced that she has approved the business case for Inis Oírr pier.
This project is listed as one of the government’s key infrastructure commitments in the Project Ireland 2040 plan.
This development addresses safety risk issues that have arisen over the years, in particular the danger from waves breaking over the pier.
Additionally, the development is aimed at solving other challenges arising from the numbers of tourists and ferry vessels using the Inis Oírr pier.
With the approval of the business case by the Minister, Galway County Council can proceed to the next steps of the project which includes seeking tenders for the work.
Announcing her approval of the Business Case today, Minister Humphreys said:
“I absolutely recognise the critical importance of this development to the community on Inis Oírr, and I am pleased to give my approval to the project.”
“The government’s ambitious new policy for rural development, Our Rural Future, commits to investing in critical infrastructure in our island communities. The Inis Oírr pier project is absolutely vital for the future of the island and the safety of harbour users, both islanders and visitors.”
“I would like to thank the officials of Galway County Council who worked on and prepared the Business case in conjunction with officials from my department.”
“I would also like to acknowledge the work of the local Oireachtas members who I met with collectively a number of weeks ago and who are passionate advocates for the delivery of this project on Inis Oirr.”
“I am pleased to confirm that Galway County Council can now proceed to tender.”
