Minister Patrick O’Donovan welcomed the opening of The Treaty 1921 exhibition at the Coach House Gallery in Dublin Castle today:
“The OPW and I are delighted to support the National Archives of Ireland in exhibiting this fascinating collection of documents, which help tell so many of the stories that contextualise the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The Treaty was signed early in the morning of 6 December 1921 and ratified by the Dáil on 7 January 1922. Nine days later, when Dublin Castle was formally handed over to the new Irish government, copies of the same treaty were exchanged between Michael Collins, then President of the Provisional Government, and Viscount FitzAlan of Derwent, the last Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. It is very fitting that this historic document is returning to Dublin Castle, just under a century later, where the public will have the opportunity to learn more about it in the exhibition that the National Archives of Ireland has curated in the Castle’s Coach House Gallery.”
