The Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan, has travelled to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to attend the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) to lead Ireland’s delegation for the concluding week of the conference.
Negotiations are intensifying on key issues, including enhanced ambition and increases in climate finance with a particular focus on addressing climate-induced loss and damage.
Ireland is committed to scaling up our International Climate Finance. As part of the commitment to provide €225 million per year in climate finance by 2025, a more than doubling of our support, the Minister will announce a funding package of €24 million at COP27 to support climate action in developing countries. This includes new funding of over €18 million.
Minister Ryan said:
"Loss and damage is a priority for Ireland at COP27. We are committed to supporting the most vulnerable who continue to be the most exposed to climate change. Urgent action is required to protect our planet and our people, from further climate-induced devastation. This means staying true to the science, delivering immediate and rapid reductions in emissions through an accelerated clean energy transition, breaking our dependence on fossil fuels as well as scaling up of climate finance, including for loss and damage in ways that meet the needs of the furthest behind first.
"Ireland is committed to deliver a 51% reduction in emissions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050. The next Climate Action Plan, which will be published in the coming weeks, will set out how we will achieve reductions across key sectors to ensure that we deliver on our commitments under the Paris Agreement."
As part of this package, the Minister will announce:
Engagements at COP27 will include the Minister taking an active role and participating at membership meetings of high-level coalitions, including:
Minister Ryan will also attend a number of bilateral meetings, and actively participate in negotiation meetings throughout the final days of the summit.
