This year, 2024, marks the 30th anniversary of Athenry Castle being open to the public. In celebration of this milestone, the Office of Public Works (OPW) will be holding an exhibition later in the year to mark this special occasion. In preparation for this event, the OPW are calling on the public to provide any pre-restoration photographs and paintings of the castle and other monuments in Athenry that they may have.
Since opening its doors to the public in May 1994, Athenry Castle has been a popular destination for visitors, historians, and locals alike. To mark the 30th anniversary of its restoration, the castle is planning to display photos from before and during the restoration, as well as images of other important monuments in the town such as the priory, North Wall, market cross, and town walls.
John Conlon, Chairman of the Office of Public Works said
“Athenry is among some of the best preserved medieval towns in Ireland. It is home to Athenry Castle, Dominican abbey and other important historical monuments. These landmarks play a significant role in the local community. They contribute to the local sense of place, the local economy and are great places for all the family to enjoy. We believe that preserving and sharing the history of Athenry is crucial in understanding and appreciating the town's rich heritage. By showcasing these old photographs and paintings, we hope to evoke memories and enrich our understanding of how Athenry evolved over the centuries."
The public appeal for pre-restoration photographs and paintings is an opportunity for people to contribute to the celebration of Athenry's medieval past. The display will not only educate visitors about the town's history but also serve as a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage for future generations. The photographs/ paintings will be on display from mid-October until the end of October.
