The primary objective of the Official Languages Act 2003 is to ensure that high quality services will be widely available through Irish. Part of that process requires public companies to agree a language scheme with the Minister for Tourism, Culture Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. These guidelines, which were issued under Article 12 of the Act, consist of practical directions to assist public companies with the preparation of language schemes. It should be noted that these guidelines may be revised to take account of legislative amendments that may arise on foot of the review of the Act which has been conducted by the department.
