The European Commission launched a public consultation on the reform of the European Union's electricity market design to better protect consumers from excessive price volatility, support their access to secure energy from clean sources, and make the market more resilient.
The consultation will support the Commission's work on a legislative proposal aimed to be delivered in the first quarter of this year. The consultation closed on 13 February and focused on four main areas:
The Department engaged with a number of stakeholders and hosted workshops with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, EirGrid, the Economic and Social Research Institute along with a number of academics as well as with industry. All contributions were appreciated. The submission that was provided to the European Commission following this engagement is below.
