Our general advice is: do not travel overseas for non-essential purposes.
Ireland is part of the EU ‘traffic lights’ approach to travel, which applies to countries in the EU / EEA.
A map will be published each week by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), based on agreed criteria, including the 14-day cumulative incidence rate, testing rate and testing positivity rates.
As of 15 January, the government advises against all travel to and from countries in South America (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela).
Countries around the world are implementing restrictions on entry, and these are changing frequently. If you do decide to travel, you should check the travel advice for the country and region of destination, and carefully monitor the official advice and information from the public authorities there, as well as the Department of Foreign Affairs travel advice pages.
Please follow the public health guidelines of the local health authorities and to continue to practise physical distancing measures, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette.
Due to the identification of new strains of COVID-19 in England and in South Africa, we strongly advise against all non-essential travel to Great Britain and to South Africa. The consular assistance available to anyone who travels there in the current circumstances will be very limited.
