Game birds can only be imported under licence. Applications for an import licence must be submitted at least 5 working days in advance of import.
Importers must complete application forms to import day old game birds and game birds more than 72 hours old. These application forms include details such as the place of origin of the game birds to be imported.
Game birds include mallards, pheasants, quail and partridge. Game birds, especially ducks and geese, are thought to be at particular risk of catching avian flu due to the traditional rearing systems that lead to contact with wild waterfowl.
In order for veterinary checks to be carried out if deemed necessary by the Department, in addition to an application for a licence, you must provide advance notification of at least 1 working day prior to import by email to livetrade@agriculture.gov.ie . The place of destination must be a poultry holding which is registered with the Department.
