The Department of Defence is one of the government departments primarily concerned with ensuring the secure and stable environment necessary for economic growth and development.

The high level goal of the Defence organisation is:

"To provide for the military defence of the State, contribute to national and international peace and security and fulfil all other roles assigned by government."

Sections of the Department

The department is organised in four divisions, each of which is headed by an Assistant Secretary or Director who also oversees governance of the department:

  • Defence Capability (People)
  • Department of Defence Operations Division
  • International Affairs and Legislation
  • Strategic Planning, Capability-Development and Corporate Support Divisions
