"As Minister for Justice, Des O’Malley protected the State during one of its most difficult and dangerous periods.
"He showed great courage in facing down those who threatened not just the State, but also the safety of him personally and that of his family.
"Des O’Malley also ensured that the State was equipped to take on the subversives and paramilitaries through the Special Criminal Court.
"He showed great courage throughout his long career of public service in his desire to change our society, our economy and our politics.
"My condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues. May he rest in peace."
