The Programme for Government committed to establishing a Commission on Housing to examine issues such as tenure, standards, sustainability and quality-of-life issues in the provision of housing, all of which have long-term impacts on communities.
The government’s Housing for All plan outlines that the Commission presents an opportunity to build on the policy set out in the Plan, taking a long-term strategic view on these aspects of housing, over an extended time horizon post 2030, as well as other issues identified as being suitable for in-depth examination.
The Programme for Government also contains a commitment to hold a referendum on housing. It is planned that The Housing Commission will work to bring forward proposals on the referendum on housing referred to in the Programme for Government.
The Commission is a non-statutory Commission and is time bound (to end July 2023). The Commission will seek to build consensus on issues of importance to stakeholders. The Commission will engage in public consultations and further structured engagement will be carried out throughout the course of the Housing Commission’s work.
