The Minister of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Patrick O’Donovan TD, joined today in the celebration of Europe Day, marking the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration and the birth of the European Union. This day serves as a reminder of the unity, diversity, and shared values that define Europe and its member states.
Europe Day is an occasion to reflect on the achievements of European cooperation and integration, particularly in the realms of education, research, and innovation. As Ireland's Minister of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Patrick O’Donovan acknowledges the crucial role that European collaboration plays in advancing education, fostering research excellence, and driving innovation across borders.
Minister O’Donovan said:
"As we celebrate Europe Day, we recognise the invaluable contributions of European cooperation to the advancement of education, research, and innovation.
"Ireland remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering collaboration with our European partners, as we collectively strive to build a brighter future for our citizens and communities.
"My Department works with other Member States on the continued development of both the European Research Area and the European Education Area. I take this opportunity to highlight a number of initiatives which have been made possible as a direct result of Ireland’s active engagement with our EU colleagues."
Since 1984, the EU has coordinated nine consecutive Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation. Irish researchers and innovators have been part of each one, receiving a total of €2.95 billion over the last forty years. €319 million was drawn down in 2023 alone, showcasing the excellent talent pool present in Ireland, both at higher education institutes and research performing industries.
In February of this year €84 million was allocated to the ‘TU RISE’ scheme, making another positive step in the provision of research and innovation opportunities for the Technological University sector through EU co-funded Regional Programmes. This initiative aims to set up, equip and staff regional research and innovation offices within Technological Universities, facilitating enhanced collaboration with local and regional business, industry, and enterprise stakeholders.
In 2023, the Department welcomed The European Year of Skills emphasising its commitment to prioritising skills development and raising awareness of reskilling and upskilling opportunities. The Department acknowledges the importance of fostering a culture of peer learning and promoting social cohesion through inclusivity. These ongoing efforts play a crucial role in strengthening the social fabric of society through championing inclusivity, bridging divides, and removing barriers for the marginalised.
The European Social Fund Plus serves as a crucial mechanism within the EU framework for promoting socio-economic advancement. Since joining the EU in 1973, Ireland has benefited substantially, receiving some €7 billion in support. These funds have been allocated towards initiatives aimed at strengthening employment, education and addressing poverty. The fund underscores the commitment to enhancing societal well-being and fostering equal opportunities.
Global Citizens 2030 aims to enhance EU engagement through the utilisation of key programmes such as the Erasmus+ Programme, the European Universities Initiative, Horizon Europe, and SFI Arc. These initiatives facilitate increased academic mobility, foster cross-border research collaborations, and contribute to addressing global challenges through innovative initiatives.
Minister Patrick O’Donovan remarked:
“In commemorating Europe Day, we underscore Ireland's commitment to strengthening our ties with fellow European nations in the fields of education, research, and innovation.
“In the spirit of Europe Day, I encourage all stakeholders in the Irish education and research sectors to seize the opportunities presented by European collaboration, furthering the exchange of knowledge, ideas, and best practices for the benefit of all.”
