Government approves appointment of new member to the Just Transition Commission of Ireland

The government has approved the appointment of Brian Flynn to the Just Transition Commission of Ireland for a 3-year term.

The Just Transition Commission, chaired by Ali Sheridan, plays a key role in advising and supporting the government to ensure that the move to a climate neutral economy is fair and benefits everyone. The government is committed to a just transition to climate neutrality, and the need to maximise employment opportunities, to support people and communities that may be most negatively affected by the transition away from fossil fuels, and to place engagement and sustainable community development at the heart of its approach.

The appointment of Mr Flynn as an independent expert will provide particular focus on rural and community development.

Welcoming the government's approval of Mr Flynn, the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O'Brien, said:

"I am delighted to welcome Brian as a new member of the Just Transition Commission of Ireland. Brian's first-hand experience of living and working in a region heavily impacted by the decarbonisation of the energy sector will bring a specific perspective to the work of the Commission. His insights into the lived experience of impacted workers, as one himself, and his understanding of how the region overcame challenges to reinvent itself will provide unique perspectives. Brian's clear interest and commitment to rural and community development, will add to the wealth of expertise and experience within the Commission as it continues its very important role. I would also like to thank the outgoing Commissioner – Mr Seamus Boland – for his contribution to the Commission."
