Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris travels to London to undertake a St. Patrick’s Day programme

The Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Simon Harris, is in London today (15th March) to undertake a St. Patrick’s Day programme that will include bilateral meetings with the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves MP, and with Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy MP.

This is the second St. Patrick’s Day visit undertaken by the Tánaiste, after he visited Paris earlier this week where he undertook a series of political, business and cultural engagements.

As part of the London programme, the Tánaiste will participate in a number of community events including the London St. Patrick’s Day parade today (Sunday, 15th March) and meet with a wide range of Irish Community leaders.

Tomorrow (Monday 16th March), he will address a roundtable with business executives at an event hosted by the British Irish Chamber of Commerce and he will also speak at a Bloomberg Financial Services Forum later that morning.

Later in the day, the Tánaiste will hold bilateral meetings with the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Deputy Prime Minister.

Speaking ahead of the visit, the Tánaiste said:

Given the deep links between Ireland and the UK, I welcome the opportunity to visit London to represent the Government as part of the St. Patrick’s Day programme of engagement.

“Across Britain, hundreds of thousands of people claim Irish heritage. Our families, culture and economies are deeply intertwined. The St. Patrick’s Day festival provides an opportunity to connect and celebrate a shared heritage.

“I also look forward to meeting with representatives of companies across the UK to discuss our strong economic ties and our shared challenges and opportunities.

“Finally, following on from very constructive discussions at the UK-Ireland summit in Cork yesterday, I look forward to meeting with both Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy.

“In the context of our unique relationship with the UK, and at this time of global uncertainty, it is essential that we continue to foster close relationships with our nearest neighbour.”
