Tánaiste & Minister for Finance, Simon Harris T.D., meeting with Greek Finance Minister, Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris met this morning with Mr. Kyriakos Pierrakakis, Minister for Economy and Finance of Greece.
Both Ministers highlighted the strong bilateral relationship between Ireland and Greece, and shared commitment to a more sustainable and competitive European economy.
Ahead of the meeting, an Tánaiste said:
“I am delighted to welcome Minister Pierrakakis to Dublin as we celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Greece. We share a host of positives to reflect on over the past fifty years.
His country’s strong economic performance is a testament to the reforms and investments that Greece has delivered in recent years, which is a real positive for the overall EU economy and also supportive of growing economic links between our two countries.
In a time of geopolitical instability and economic uncertainty, it is more necessary than ever that we work within the EU to enhance coordination of our economic policies and advance the deepening and integration of the single market. Over the coming months, Ireland and Greece will be working closely together to advance these priorities as part of the next EU Presidency Trio that begins with Ireland’s EU Presidency next July.”
While Minister Pierrakakis stated:
“Greece and Ireland, two countries on Europe’s geographic edge but at the heart of the European institutional architecture, share common European values and a common vision for a strong Europe. We follow the path of fiscal prudence and stability, have left the crisis behind us, and are generating fiscal surpluses that are returned to society and contribute to debt reduction. We have much to learn from one another.
The inclusion of the Athens Stock Exchange in the Euronext group, which also includes the Dublin Stock Exchange, opens up significant financing opportunities for our economies and our businesses, as we promote the implementation of a fully-fledged Savings and Investment Union and the further deepening of European capital markets. Ireland hosts one of the most dynamic financial ecosystems in the EU – a hub for innovation, asset management, insurance and fintech.”
Elsewhere during his visit, Minister Pierrakakis participated in a fireside chat at the Institute of International and European Affairs, the theme of the event was “Europe’s Next Phase of Growth: Integration, Innovation, and the Digital Economy”.
