Gianpiero Cavalleri

Gianpiero Cavalleri is Professor of Human Genetics in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is also Deputy Director of the Research Ireland FutureNeuro Centre for Translational Brain Science. With expertise and experience in human population and medical genomics, his research has advanced our understanding of the nature and relevance of human genetic variation and its application to diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases.

Professor Cavalleri is playing an important role in shaping Ireland’s national human genomics infrastructure. He provides national leadership for international collaborations in which the Department of Health is participating, specifically the ‘Genomic Data Infrastructure’ (GDI) programme, which is building a federated system for the secure storage and analysis of genomic data across the European Union, and the ‘Genome of Europe’, which is building a reference dataset to represent genomic variation across the European continent, including the island of Ireland. Both programmes are implemented in partnership with patients and the public and form part of the wider European ‘1+ Million Genomes Initiative’. He is also helping connect Irish rare disease genomic research studies to the European Alliance for Rare Disease Research (ERDERA), leveraging large-scale European studies to help find a genetic cause for people living with rare disease in Ireland. He is committed to bridging cutting-edge science and innovation with national policy and public benefit.
