Stefano Sanvito

Educated in Italy (University of Milan), the UK (Lancaster University) and the US (University of California at Santa Barbara), Prof. Sanvito is the Chair of Condensed Matter Theory in the School of Physics at Trinity College Dublin and also the director of CRANN, Ireland flagship Nanoscience Institute (www.tcd.ie/crann/). His main research interests are in the development of novel algorithms for materials science across the scales, and to their deployment in current problems of industrial and societal relevance. Recently, he has pioneered the use of machine learning and AI in the material-discovery process, and of large-language models for data extraction from published documents.

In 2007 he received the Young Scientist Prize in Computational Physics from the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and in 2012 a European Research Council Award. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a fellow of Trinity College Dublin and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. In 2017 he was conferred the title of “Cavaliere della Stella d’Italia” (knight of the star of Italy), an Italian knighthood order given to Italians abroad, who have contributed to enhance the prestige of Italy and to establish relations with foreign countries. In 2020, 2021 and 2023 he was included in the list of the Highly Cited Researchers from Clarivat.
