In light of the experience over the two years since the publication of the original Careers in Construction Action Plan, the Careers in Construction Working Group have now reviewed and updated the plan to reflect progress made and the evolving context.
This new iteration adopts a responsive approach to enable emerging challenges to be met over its lifetime. Building on the original Plan, the Updated Careers in Construction Action Plan redirects efforts in light of:
- updated research,
- progress to date,
- alignment with the new Programme for Government,
- relevant construction skills plans and initiatives, and
- expansion of the membership of the Working Group.
The Updated Careers in Construction Action Plan has 36 actions, an increase of 80% from the original Plan. The actions cross three thematic areas:
- Education and training
Actions include developing an iVET construction taster course; expanding the Skillnet MMC Accelerate platform; ensuring skills developed by the onsite labour force can be transferred into offsite facilities; developing of new education pathways towards professional careers; and using online and app-based delivery where appropriate.
2. Widening participation
Actions include ensuring gender-inclusive recruitment policies; holding events for under-represented and minority groups; providing mentoring programmes for female employees; identifying opportunities for eligible International Protection applicants; and developing a pilot training programme for prisoners.
3. Promotional efforts.
Actions include delivering national promotional campaigns; promoting conversion programmes; holding recruitment fairs; and promoting offsite manufacturing roles.
