Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, has today welcomed the publication of the Third National Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Strategy.
The third level education sector has already adopted a zero tolerance approach to sexual harassment and gender based violence.
The Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science will lead on the following areas of this strategy:
- training on sexual consent and the issue of sexual violence and harassment to all staff and students in higher education
- rolling out of the online learning hub on sexual consent and awareness to all who work and attend in third level
- collecting data on the issue of sexual violence and harassment within higher education settings
- the introduction of domestic violence leave for staff across third level
Speaking today, Minister Harris said:
"The third level sector must continue to lead the way on changes, championing the changes required to achieve a cultural norm where bullying and sexual harassment are not tolerated.
"My department is working together with higher education institutions to ensure that we create a culture of zero tolerance. Staff and students are entitled to a safe environment to study and work free from harassment or violence.
"But we also have the future in our hands too. The third level sector can ensure the next generation of leaders are equipped with the knowledge and the education to ensure sexual and gender-based violence is eradicated."
