Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless obtained government approval to initiate a programme to attract global talent to Ireland.
Minister Lawless will now advance the work that has already begun alongside Research Ireland in initiating a programme to attract early career researchers and established academics to Irish institutions. The programme will advance commitments in the Programme for Government and focus on areas of opportunity. Thematic areas of focus for research projects will reflect key economic and societal priorities in areas such as energy security, healthcare, life sciences, digital technologies and AI, food security, cyber security, semiconductors and quantum technologies.
Minister Lawless said:
“Higher education and research are key economic enablers. The establishment of my department and its role in fostering innovation, supporting higher education and promoting research are all critical components in sustaining, strengthening and future-proofing Ireland’s economy.
“This announcement continues to advance the priority of building Ireland’s knowledge-driven economy, which is strongly underpinned by a renewed commitment in the Programme for Government to enhance Ireland’s research and innovation system.
“Irish research centres and talent are essential in driving forward innovation and cultivating the next generation of talent. I am steadfast in supporting the research sector’s development. The investment required to attract established researchers as well as rising stars to Ireland will not only facilitate the projects they’re investigating, it will also add to the knowledge and skills base within Irish Higher Education Institutions, adding a significant multiplier effect.
“In a time of uncertainty for the scientific community, Ireland remains firmly committed to investing in scientific excellence and upholding the core values of academic integrity and independence. Ireland offers stability, opportunity and excellence. We are building a future grounded in talent, collaboration and global leadership. We are committed to supporting Irish researchers at home and also to welcoming exceptional global talent who might now be questioning where they’ll be able to further their work.
“Ireland has an opportunity to advance open, ambitious and world-leading science. We will seize that opportunity – by investing in talent, fostering innovation and ensuring that our research community continues to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society and the economy."
