Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless, today welcomed the appointment of two eminent firms to lead the architecture, design and project and cost management elements of the development of a new Library and Learning Centre in Mary Immaculate College Limerick.

Scott Tallon Walker Architects and AECOM Ireland Ltd. will work on the new, 5,000 square metre Library and Learning Centre —a cutting edge, 21st century facility for teaching, learning and research—which will be situated at the heart of the Limerick campus. It will provide the latest in facilities for students and staff and the growing academic requirements of a student population at MIC now in excess of 5,000 students overall.

The project will proceed through detailed design stages during 2025 towards a target of completion by mid-2027 and is supported by the Higher Education Authority (HEA). It is hoped that construction of the library will commence in 2026 with a provisional opening date of Autumn 2027. Further details on the library development, including its timeline and key features, will be shared in the coming months.

Speaking today Minister Lawless welcomed the appointment and said:

“This is an important step in the development of a state-of-the-art educational hub in the heart of Limerick city, in a campus that combines architecture from past and present that makes it truly unique.”

Professor Dermot Nestor, MIC President, said:

“I welcome the financial commitment towards this key strategic initiative that meets the requirements of a contemporary and dynamic higher education institution. This Library & Learning Resource Centre will not only serve as a focal point on this historic campus, but will also be an inclusive amenity for all, one that will stand for generations to come.”

Ciarán McCaffrey, Head of Capital Programmes at the HEA, said:

“The appointments announced today represent a significant milestone in delivering what is a landmark project for Mary Immaculate College. The development of a new Library and Learning Resource Centre will enrich the campus experience at MIC and provide high quality facilities that support the academic needs of both students and staff, enhancing teaching, learning and research."

This project is receiving funding under Project Ireland 2040 which recognises that investment in education is central to achieving a strong, future-proofed economy, balanced across the regions.
