The PPSN is used as a key reference field on a number of databases for enquiries, checking for duplication, cross referencing and checking individual cases with the Department of Social Protection and the Health Service Executive in the housing area. The relevant data is also used in exchanges with the Revenue Commissioners for the purpose of the City Council being reimbursed for monies it has paid over to the mortgage customers.
Waterford City and County Council also used the PPSN on P60's submitted in relation to loan and rent assessment and Social Welfare documentation for assessing waivers (refuse charges and so on).
