The Minister for Defence, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D., on 6 January 2015 ordered an independent review of the investigation of the death of Private Hugh Doherty and the disappearance of Private Kevin Joyce on 27 April 1981 while serving as members of the Irish Battalion with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at an observation post (OP) west of Dyar Ntar village.

The review was to encompass an examination of all relevant documents held by the Department and the Defence Forces into the events of 27 April 1981.
