Niall Collins TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for International Law, Law Reform and Youth Justice, represented Ireland at a meeting of European Justice and Home Affairs Ministers held in Cyprus.
Ministers discussed the introduction of a more coordinated, sustainable and efficient approach to returns and reintegration. Particular focus was placed on prioritising the return of individuals who pose a security threat or who have been convicted of serious offences.
The need to strengthen internal security to protect the free movement of European citizens and prevent secondary movements of migrants in a border free Union was also discussed.
Targeting the assets of those involved in organised crime was identified as a key component in tackling criminal activity. Ministers exchanged views and national practices on how to strengthen asset recovery in an evolving financial landscape, including through greater public-private partnerships.
Ministers and officials presented on their national approaches to diverting young people who use drugs away from the criminal justice system, including by using alternatives to detentions that have been proven to be effective. Discussions followed on how the European Union might support Member States in further developing such initiatives.
