Minister Stanton welcomes IRPP Refugees in Drumshanbo

The Minister of State for Justice at the Department of Justice and Equality with special responsibility for Equality, Immigration, and Integration, David Stanton TD, visited Drumshanbo on Wednesday 4 April 2018 at the invitation of Drumshanbo Parish Council. The Parish Council hosted a social ‘get together’ where the new Syrian residents in the town met their local neighbours and friends alongside members of the parish council.
Since the Syrian families have arrived in the town members of the parish community have been involved in visiting and assisting their new residents in settling into the community.
Speaking at the event, Minister Stanton said:
“I am grateful to the community of Drumshanbo, Carrick-on-Shannon and to the wider county of Leitrim who have warmly embraced and welcomed these families. I acknowledge the work of the Council’s Interagency Working Group, whose members have worked which such dedication and service. This comprehensive, joined-up approach represents a unique structure with considerable potential for developing and introducing a new regional mechanism capable of service delivery at a local level.”
The EU relocation programme in Greece officially closed on 31 March 2018 and under this strand Ireland has now relocated its full quota of 1,022 asylum seekers, in addition to the 792 programme refugees who have already been resettled in Ireland directly from Lebanon. Efforts will now be focused on delivering on the continuing commitments under the resettlement strand of the IRPP, working closely with the UNHCR, and on the new humanitarian family reunification scheme (FRHAP).
