Brian Flynn

The Deputy Political Director supports the Deputy Secretary General/Political Director in the general administration of Political Division. The Deputy Political Director manages the Political Secretariat, including the European Correspondent’s Office, with responsibility for preparation of EU Foreign Affairs Council meetings, as well as a broader coordination function relating to the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), working closely with the Political and Security Council Delegation at the Permanent Representation of Ireland in Brussels. The Political Secretariat is also responsible for general coordination within Political Division, as well as for Departmental engagement with the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence. In addition, the Deputy Political Director serves as head of the Department’s Sanctions Team and chairs the Cross-Departmental International Sanctions Committee (CDISC).
