Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, today (16 March) will visit Kyiv, Ukraine. It is the first St Patrick’s Day programme undertaken by an Irish Minister since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia took place. During his visit to Ukraine, Minister Byrne will meet with political leaders, mark St Patrick’s Day amongst the Irish community and guests in Kyiv, and meet with civil society leaders.
Speaking ahead of the visit, Minister Byrne said: “On St Patrick’s Day, Ireland celebrates its friendships with other nations around the world, and I consider my St Patrick’s Day visit to Ukraine, to be a reflection of Ireland’s steadfast and unbreakable solidarity with Ukraine and its people. During my visit to Kyiv, I will meet with members of the Ukrainian government, parliament and society, to gain a direct insight into the challenges facing ordinary Ukrainians. In looking ahead to Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU later this year, support for Ukraine will be a key focus for us, particularly as Ukraine advances to EU membership. We will work to ensure that Ukraine continues to have access to the finance it needs. It is in our collective interests to do so.”
Minister Byrne continued: “In contrast, Russia’s response to peace efforts has been more missiles and destruction. This has resulted in civilian casualties and has deprived millions of Ukrainians of electricity, heating and water throughout a bitter winter. We will maintain pressure on Russia through robust targeted sanctions and support all efforts to ensure Russian accountability for their actions.”
