Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne TD, today attended the inauguration of Séamus Boland as President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). Séamus Boland is the first Irish national to assume the Presidency of the EESC since it was founded in 1957.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister Byrne said: “I want to congratulate Séamus Boland on his appointment, which is a recognition of his long commitment to the values that underpin our shared European project, namely dialogue, inclusion and solidarity.”
Minister Byrne continued: “The timing of Séamus Boland’s appointment as President of the European Economic and Social Committee is significant for Ireland. In just eight months, we will assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU and I know that the EESC will be an important partner during our term. This collaboration will prove important when Ireland seeks advisory opinions from the EESC. I look forward to enhanced co-operation between Ireland and the EESC in future.”
