The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee TD, has today announced a call for applications for the Global Ireland Young Leaders Programme 2026. Established in 2023, this programme invites Transition Year students in Ireland and Year 11/Year 12 students in Northern Ireland to apply for a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insights into Ireland’s foreign policy and diplomacy through a three-day immersive programme in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade offices in Dublin.
Making today’s announcement, the Minister said: “The Global Ireland Young Leaders’ Programme is designed to inspire independent and creative thinking among second-level students about Ireland’s role in the world. By encouraging young people to consider their role in international cooperation and foreign policy we are creating a future shaped by international collaboration and understanding.
“The Young Leaders programme is a wonderful opportunity for young people to gain valuable insights into diplomacy and international cooperation. As we prepare for Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2026, it is more important than ever that young people share their voices and experiences on our foreign policy objectives. I look forward to seeing this year's participants bring fresh perspectives and ambition to Ireland's global engagement.”
Successful applicants will engage with senior officials, diplomats, civil society partners, and Embassy teams, providing participants with valuable perspectives on Ireland’s global engagement. A specific focus will be placed on Ireland and the European Union, reflecting the upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union which Ireland will hold for the eighth time from 1 July to 31 December 2026.
