Minister Richmond to attend Informal Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers

Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond, will attend an Informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) in Warsaw on 7 and 8 May.

Ministers will discuss a range of issues, including Russian aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, security and defence, and EU-US relations. Ministers will also be joined by UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, for the first working session which will provide an opportunity to discuss key policy issues of shared interest with the UK.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Minister Richmond said:

“I am looking forward to the discussions in Warsaw this week. This will be an opportunity to discuss the full range of pressing challenges facing the EU at the moment, including the ongoing appalling situation in Gaza, support for Ukraine, and EU-US relations. It will be an opportunity to further demonstrate our unity and collective backing for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression. I also look forward to the discussion with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on how the EU and UK can increase their cooperation across a wide range of areas.”

The Gymnich will be followed by a working lunch with EU candidate and potential candidate countries. This will be an opportunity for an informal exchange of views on current challenges to European common foreign and security policy, with a focus on building resilience against hybrid threats.

Ahead of this meeting, the Minister said:

“Ireland is a strong supporter of a merit-based EU enlargement process. The EU, its member states and candidate countries must continue to work together to ensure that momentum towards enlargement continues and that we successfully counter any external efforts to undermine the accession process."
