Statement by Minister McEntee on the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster

Today, we mark forty years since the world’s worst nuclear disaster at Chornobyl.

We remember the many lives lost that day, the bravery of first responders who gave their lives to prevent an even greater disaster, and the communities that continue to be impacted by its devastating consequences.

We think of the many affected children that have been offered respite and recovery here in Ireland, the families that have welcomed them, and the enduring bonds that have been created. And we acknowledge the Irish organisations that continue to work tirelessly in the region making a significant humanitarian impact.

In the decades since, the international community has taken robust measures to ensure nuclear safety. And yet, as Russia continues its relentless war against Ukraine including reckless attacks that have compromised containment efforts at Chornobyl, the risk of further catastrophe remains.

40 years on, Russia’s reckless and illegal war of aggression in Ukraine brings new threats to Chornobyl. Nuclear disaster is once again a fear for many.

The world can ill afford another Chornobyl. We must learn the tragic lessons of that day.
