Statement by Minister of State Richmond on the third anniversary of the Sudan war

Today marks the third anniversary of the war in Sudan, a war that has seen unimaginable and indescribable cruelty inflicted on civilians.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed, with many more experiencing life-changing injury – both physical and mental – which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

The conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has plummeted to new depths of depravity. It is a conflict marked by a complete disregard for the most basic norms of international law.

The UN has documented outrageous and inhumane breaches of international law, including the killing of civilians, indiscriminate attacks on populated areas, arbitrary detention and torture, and the systematic use of sexual violence against women and girls.

The war has resulted in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. By working in partnership with the UN and aid agencies, Irish Aid has contributed real and tangible support for people living through this brutal war. Humanitarian workers in Sudan continue their life-saving work in the face of threats and attacks.

It is clear that war crimes have been committed on both sides. A recent UN fact-finding mission reported that attacks by the RSF bear the hallmarks of genocide.

As the conflict enters its fourth year, there is an urgent need for the international community to reengage to secure a comprehensive ceasefire, support the International Criminal Court’s efforts to investigate crimes perpetrated against civilians, and ensure safety for humanitarian workers.

The war in Sudan has been repeatedly raised in the Dáil by Government and Opposition TDs alike. Today I am participating in a conference in Berlin with European and other partners to discuss the international response to the crisis. Ireland will be firm in pushing for increased international engagement in efforts to end this war.

This war has led to unimaginable suffering for the people of Sudan. Its affects have also been felt beyond its borders as millions of people remain displaced.

The anniversary of the outbreak of this conflict is a moment for the world to recommit to ensuring it is brought to a stop.
