The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Harris has warmly welcomed the official launch of the UEFA EURO 2028 Tournament, which took place in London this (Wednesday) evening.
He said: “This is a tremendously exciting milestone on the road to EURO 2028. The unveiling of the tournament logo, alongside the distinctive city emblems for Dublin and the other host cities, marks a new chapter for what will be one of the biggest sporting events ever held on these islands.
“For Ireland, the announcement that Dublin will host seven matches is a huge boost — bringing major international attention, visitors and investment to our country. The latest analysis confirms that the tournament will deliver €449 million in socio-economic benefits, including a direct boost of €382 million to our economy. Lasting impacts in participation, volunteering and community pride are valued at a further €67 million.”
The Tánaiste added that with total projected costs now at €93 million — slightly less than the original estimate — the benefits will far outweigh the investment:
“This is an exceptional opportunity to showcase Ireland at its best — our hospitality, our culture, and our passion for sport.
“EURO 2028 will bring people together across these islands, and I look forward to working with all partners to ensure it’s an outstanding success.
“Earlier this year together with Minister for Sport Patrick O'Donovan, we launched Ireland’s first ever International Sports Diplomacy Framework. Hosting the Euros is an excellent example of our sports diplomacy vision when the eyes of the world will be on Ireland in the summer of 2028.
“I want to thank Minister O'Donovan for his efforts in delivering this, going above and beyond to ensure that not only were the League of Ireland academies funded in the budget, but this spectacular sporting event will draw more attention and interest in Irish football.”
