Tánaiste launches a new Statement of Strategy for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Harris, has today launched a new Statement of Strategy for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, for the period 2025 to 2028. This Statement of Strategy sets out the Department’s key priorities for the next three years, across six high-level goals. Speaking on the new Statement of Strategy, the Tánaiste said:

“I am pleased to launch this new Statement of Strategy for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; it sets out what we want to achieve in the period ahead.

“Our overall objectives are clear. Sustaining peace and reconciliation on this island, delivering first class consular and passport services, and supporting our diaspora communities abroad remains essential. Increasing our influence in Europe, including in the context of our Presidency next year, doubling down on our support for the multilateral order and our commitment to sustainable development, and deepening our global engagement will continue to be priorities.

“The international context in which we pursue these goals, however, is increasingly uncertain. In a global environment, where rapid and unpredictable change is the new norm, our strong commitment to the rules based international order is both a reflection of our fundamental values and an expression of our fundamental interests. We will continue to demonstrate this commitment, including through our support for Ukraine and our efforts to end the suffering in Palestine and revitalise support for a two state solution.

“As the Statement of Strategy makes clear, our diplomatic mission network is a key strategic enabler for the State in delivering on the Government’s priorities and collaboration across Government, and with our international partners, will be essential as we deliver on our commitments.”
