Tánaiste Simon Harris announced today his intention to establish a grant scheme to support early career researchers exploring research collaborations between Ireland and Wales. The announcement was made during the Tánaiste’s visit to Wales for the annual Ireland Wales Forum at which the new Ireland-Wales Shared Statement 2030 was launched.
The new scheme, which will be administered by the Royal Irish Academy (RIA), seeks to promote research collaboration between Ireland and Wales under the Ireland-Wales Shared Statement. The scheme will provide small grants to support early-career researchers in the initial stages of developing research projects with Welsh partners.
Speaking at the University of Swansea today, the Tánaiste stated:
“Fostering research collaborations is an important part of our bilateral relationship with Wales. We know the real value of researchers on both sides of the Irish Sea coming together to share their expertise and develop partnerships for the future. It can often be difficult however for researchers, early in their careers, to access resources to scope projects. As we launch the new Ireland-Wales Shared Statement 2030, I hope that this scheme will assist a new generation of researchers in Ireland and Wales to develop long-lasting, collaborative links.
“The Royal Irish Academy continues to play an important role in promoting academic connections and research across these islands. Working in partnership with the Academy, I look forward to fostering these important connections into the future.”
Pat Guiry, President, RIA said:
“Helping to establish those fresh connections between talented early-career researchers on both sides of the Irish Sea is a practical step that we in the Academy are proud to champion. We look forward to launching the call in the autumn and are excited to see the next generation of scholars translate the ambitions of the Ireland-Wales Shared Statement 2030 into innovative and impactful research.”
The RIA will formally launch the new scheme in the autumn. Further details will be available in September 2025 at: www.ria.ie.
